c'est la vie...

In the spirit of hell midterms week, I turned to my French roots and remembered the phrase, "C'est la vie." Yep -- that's life.

And then I played worked my other job for a little bit and came up with this:

Pretty good, oiu?

Yeah. I get paid to play with blocks and then write step-by-step guides for how to make the structures. It's definitely my favorite part of being an advertising blog writer...thing (I actually don't know what my job title is).

Pray that I don't die this week. As in I'm only slightly joking.

good-bye, Google Reader...

So.

With Google Reader peacin' out, let's stay connected with this little link right here: Bloglovin'.com

I've rolled y'all over already because there are too many people who I will miss hearing from if I don't! Seriously -- who ever thought you could feel such a connection to people you've never met? It's like books -- you read and you love.

Keep in touch, yeah?

in need of a break...

Well friends, this is it.

I'm taking a break from blogging for awhile. I don't foresee it being a long one -- but I just need to figure things out.

I need to reorient my life, my feelings, my thoughts. I need to figure out who I am at this point, and what I want in life now. I need to plan and move on. Maybe try writing in a real journal for a change to move past the heartbreak.

Love you all. Talk to you soon.

purpose...

Sometimes people ask me why I write on a blog. Others ask me why I write at all. To both, I respond by saying that I love to write -- especially about life -- and that if I don't write, my head will get more confused and my heart will burst with held back emotion.

Lately I feel as though I am adrift in a tiny little boat on a large, cold sea, surrounded by dark skies and wet spray. No map or compass guides me; I couldn't steer even if I tried, for I have no paddle. There isn't even a lantern or a flashlight. The way is unclear and uncertain. On and on I float, a barely stifled panic creeping through my soul as I wonder where I am going with no end in sight.

In my metaphorical life boat, I ask myself questions.

Where are you going?
What are you going to do with your life?
Who are you?

What is your purpose?

My answer for each question is the same: I'm honestly not sure.

October marks my 5th year of blogging. Today marks my 1,000th post. You would think that after all that time of writing and discovering, I would have a clear answer for each question.

I don't have much. What I do have now, though, is more than I had before. That matters

Where are you going?
Forward.

What are you going to do with your life?
I am going to do good.

Who are you?
I am a child of the Most High God, daughter of a King. I am a daughter of good parents, a sister to two amazing young women, a friend to as many as I can be, a hard worker, a diligent student. A person with a bright future, though I may not know the way to it at this time.

What is your purpose?
To be the best person that I can be -- to look back at these years of writing and see how far I have come and realize that I can and will improve.

I am braver than I believe, stronger than I seem, and smarter than I know. My little boat heads for the horizon, my face eager for the rising sun, my heart waiting for the future.

I am not perfect. But I am not without faith.

awful nice to eat...

So.

When I first heard of The Awful Waffle, I admit that I was quite skeptical. I mean...a food joint that has the word "awful" in the title? I questioned the rhetoric of that one big time (the writing tutor in me never goes away -- I still haven't told you about the time I woke myself up doing a tutorial in my sleep -- but that's a story for another post). Who puts "awful" in the same sentence as a food and then tries to sell a product?

Well. This girl was first curious about this place (which is probably what they're going for), and so decided that she would at least give it a shot. Not to mention that it was the venue where the hip, adorbs (yes, I just said adorbs) Sierra's party of happiness and blogging joy was going to be held! Two birds with one stone: check out the waffle-awfulness and see Sisi at the same time? I think yes.

Brianna and I headed over together, and she assured me that The Awful Waffle was the opposite of its name (leading me again to wonder if the name is meant to bring in curious people like myself).

I was quite impressed with the building, the interior layout, and the design. It was a vintage-modern hodge podge collection of chalkboard topped tables, ceramic deer heads on the walls, pink and blue and mint and white and red aluminum chairs, and bird cage covered lamps. It was old and new all thrown together -- quite trendy and appealing to the current "in" crowd of young single and married adults. Which categories Brianna and I may or may not fall into (yes, we being young, me single and her married). Either way, we both liked the way everything looked! And another thing that we liked...

One word: cupcakes. That's how the party started -- cuppies courtesy of Cupcake Chic -- very excited about that one
(especially because mine was red velvet with a little heart on top)!

Fact. Nothing awful about The Awful Waffle. Especially because the menu included the specialty topping option of Creamy Smooth Peanut Butter. Um...can you say excited? An on-the-house Liege waffle topped with peanut butter and bananas, made fresh right there made me one happy little girl. AND Caroline was there, whom I have not seen since Brianna's wedding (5 months ago -- that's nigh unto forever). I love Caroline. She's beautiful. Disney princess beautiful. Really.

We were pretty happy girls. Different than most of the bloggers who were there -- I definitely gained a new perspective on the "blog world." But it was fun, and I know that I was happy. And, I must say, you would probably benefit from a visit to The Awful Waffle. Yum. Yum, yum, yum. That waffle was awfully good (I'm so funny)! You should go get one.

apology, explanation, and update...

dear World,

First, an apology. I apologize for the last few days of downer posts. Summer time was rough, and autumn time has not yet lessened in the frequency of hard days. Bad news has been common, and progress has been slow.

Second, an explanation to the above apology. See, I write about these things here because it makes processing the information easier for me. Once I write everything down and send it off into the void, I can revisit the problems as a more or less objective reader. Sometimes I pretend that I didn't write the post -- sometimes I sit back and take apart the grammar and the sentence structure, as I would in the writing center. And then I read it again, this time focusing less on the words themselves, but more on possible solutions that might come to mind.

Third, an update. I again have something that I need to write about.

Dark-thirty of this morning found me up and ready in my kitchen awaiting my friend who would drive me to the specialist's office. I set up an appointment two and a half weeks ago, and this morning brought the scheduled time with it. Saying that I was nervous is an understatement. However, I was not quite scared to death, as I was fully alive and thinking about all of the "what ifs" in my mind.

I shouldn't have been so nervous. Everything went well. Every person I talked to, from the receptionist to the nurse practitioner to the phlebotomist, was kind and helpful. Rather than telling me that I was doing something wrong and causing me to feel guilty for my lack of knowledge about my body, they each helped me feel comfortable and relaxed. Their focus was on giving me information that I can use and walking me through all of the possible solutions and outcomes. Yes, medications were prescribed, and yes, lab work was required, but it wasn't as frightening as it has been in the past.

The appointment went well. I, however, don't feel well at all. The number of tests the nurse practitioner wants to run necessitated quite a bit of blood -- I ate before and after blood was drawn, but I'm still a bit shaky. There's also the fact that the results might show some serious problems, ranging from a bit serious to serious enough that I don't want to think about it.

And so I try not to think about it. But it's hard. It's hard not to be worried. It's hard not to be scared. Everything is going to work out just fine, I'm sure. I'm still scared, though.

It doesn't help that I've been having a hard time eating anything again lately. Almost every time I make or purchase a meal, I dump it, give it away, or put it back. I can't seem to eat anything. It's not that I'm not hungry -- I just don't want to eat anything. Every once in awhile, I can't eat. Food sounds so great, but if I actually try to eat it, I feel like throwing up (or do throw up). The headaches occur more frequently as well. Most likely it's due to the lack of appetite -- not only do tummies complain when they're empty, but heads want to be sure you're aware as well.

It's probably stressed related. I don't do well with change -- things keep changing quickly and adapting is hard for me. And now, more changes will be taking place. I won't mention them all here -- there are many. There are medications to be taken on a set schedule, particular foods and drinks needing to be on hand at all times, and the nurse practitioner kindly but firmly informed me that while my school is important, homework will need to take a back seat to getting sleep. She's not worried about my physical activity, but she is concerned about the amount of sleep I get. Let me just say, she's not the only one!

Everything will be okay. It really will. For now I need to force myself to eat dinner, finish some homework, and go to bed. Besides, I have something to look forward to tomorrow night!

And so, dear World, things are okay. Life really is good -- it's better if there's a way to express the inner most thoughts and feelings. At least it is for me.

your Friend,
GKB

how to be perfect...

In honor of post number 900 (wow -- where does the time go), I am supplying a list of how to be perfect.

Okay, so these won't make a person perfect, but I do like them. I read these in a post from distracted by shiny objects over at A Tidings of Magpies, and I copied down a few of the items on the list that I liked.

Excerpts from How to be Perfect by Ron Padgett:
  • Get some sleep.
  • Be friendly. It will help make you happy.
  • Hope for everything. Expect nothing.
  • Take care of things close to home first. Straighten up your room before you save the world. Then save the world.
  • Be nice to people before they have a chance to behave badly.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Do not spend too much time with large groups of people.
  • Plan your day so you never have to rush.
  • Show your appreciation to people who do things for you, even if you have paid them, even if they do favors you don't want.
  • After dinner, wash the dishes.
  • Calm down.
  • Don't expect your children to love you, so they can, if they want to.
  • Don't be too self-critical or too self-congratulatory.
  • Imagine what you would like to see happen, and then don't do anything to make it impossible.
  • Forgive your country every once in a while. If that is not possible, go to another one.
  • If you feel tired, rest.
  • Don't be depressed about growing older. It will make you feel even older. Which is depressing.
  • Do one thing at a time.
  • If you burn your finger, put ice on it immediately. If you bang your finger with a hammer, hold your hand in the air for 20 minutes. You will be surprised by the curative powers of ice and gravity.
  • Do not inhale smoke.
  • Take a deep breath.
  • Do not smart off to a policeman.
  • Be good.
  • Be honest with yourself, diplomatic with others.
  • Do not go crazy a lot. It's a waste of time.
  • Drink plenty of water. When asked what you would like to drink, say, "Water, please."
  • Take out the trash.
  • Love life.
  • Use exact change.
  • When there's shooting in the street, don't go near the window.

There's some good advice in there (particularly that last bullet). If doing some of these don't make you perfect, they'll at least help you feel happy, right?

And a personal "how to be perfect" from me: notice the little things, for the little things can hold more beauty than the grand.

blah...

I've noticed that I blog a lot more when I'm feeling anxious. Kind of like right now.

This exam is stressing me out so much. I've studied for four hours today, and two yesterday, with some regular prepping for class sessions every day this term, but I don't feel like it's enough.

I don't know what I'm supposed to know! I don't know the format, I don't have any clue about the types of questions that will be on the exam, I don't know how to give good answers.

...thank goodness for good things...

...for my dog Misty, who has spent the whole day with me
...for Alyssa, who made the shift enjoyable
...for Brianna, who visited me at work and brought me beautiful pink flowers in a mason jar with an orange ribbon (love the ribbon so much)
...for Taco Bell, which has cheap food (even though I had to force myself not to think about what I was eating -- it's a lot better in my imagination than it is in my mouth. You can feel the calories -- sick)
...for my dad, who called me again tonight
...for silly temporary tattoos, Iron Man flying across my right collar bone (I'm such a rebel)
...for hot showers, because no one has been home to run any water all day
...for clean sheets, which smell so good and are so soft
...for parties to look forward to this weekend

Because even though I'm an emotional wreck, good things still happen.

Still...emotional wreck. I hate feeling so unprepared for an exam, especially after I've spent so much time with the material. Ugh. Whatever. Sleeping pill time. After 12pm tomorrow, the exam will be over and that will be that. Joy.

woman of light...

Lately I've been trying to get in touch with the incredible people in the blogosphere. I've kept writing on my own, but I haven't read many of the blogs I used to when I was in high school.

As I was reconnecting, I noticed a remembrance button for a name I recognized. After doing a little digging, I received an email from one of the other women whose blog I love, informing me that my friend Char had passed away in June of last year.

I had no idea -- I didn't know Char in person, but I knew her through her words and her photographs. It's actually been really, really hard to wrap my head around. I read her stories all through my years in high school. Her photos, her words, her recipes, her advice, her music -- she was an absolutely beautiful, inspiring, and genuine friend. All of the things she wrote about meant so much to me when I was in my junior and senior year. I read her blog every time she posted, until I left the blog world settle into the new world of "grown up" that I had been tossed into.

Char stopped in to visit here every once in awhile. She commented on pictures from the dances I went to, saying that I looked lovely. That was a time when I was feeling like a rather ugly duckling; she didn't think so.

She gave me advice on how to see the world as a beautiful place.

She was real, you know. She was beautiful and smart and kind and funny. She helped me be stronger and better. She truly was, and is, a wonderful, exceptional, beautiful woman of light who touched my life.

I miss you, my friend. Until we meet in heaven -- I hope it's full of light and warmth and beauty. But of course it is, because guess what? You're an angel there now.

weekend thoughts and observations...

...sometimes my thoughts are deep. other times, they're more like this...

...one of my dear, dear friends has just transferred to BYU. Welcome to Cougar Town, Brady!! I'm so, so excited to go to school with you again!! Granted he'll be in the Business building ALL the time because he's smart and cool like that, but still. It'll be good to know I have another friend on campus.
...every time I sneeze (and they're not big sneezes), the vertebrae in my back pop into alignment
...same thing happens when I lift something that weighs more than ten pounds. It isn't heavy, but my back pops anyway.
...I'm thinking about taking a second stats class just to have Patti as a professor again -- she's fantastic -- and I actually find stats really fascinating
...I have $7 in my bank account...I'm super glad that my grant came through for Spring/Summer
...is it possible to OD on Ibuprofen? Hope not...
...weird things make me cry.......like Penelope -- I cried TWICE during that movie -- double u tee heck?
...Iceburg shakes = one of the best things that has ever happened to me
...I'm actually really looking forward to school starting in two weeks...huh?
...I only sing at home when I'm by myself -- the second I hear the door, it was as though I was never belting "Someone Like You" (Jekyll and Hyde) while dancing through the house with a duster and a laundry basket (or, you know, just sitting in my room on my bed staring at walls thinking about what I should be doing)
...my bed has become one of my very best friends in the whole world
...I'll bet you $7 that my Visiting Teachers are cooler/kinder/sweeter/funnier/more helpful/make better cookies than yours do
...remember that Kid History video where the guy proclaims to the world that he hates hot dogs (at 1:53)? Well, I. HATE. ONIONS.
...music is SO POWERFUL. I was asked to sing in church, first soloing on the first verse, a duet with Amanda on the second, and then with the choir on the third and fourth verses. It was the hymn version of "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." From the first phrase, people were crying. The Spirit was so very strong. Gotta love it.
...if I could eat pizza bites, brownie shakes, carrots, peach or strawberry yogurt, and Reese's every day without getting fat/sick, I would
...spending most of two days in bed is boring
...less than two weeks until my sista-friend Brianna gets married!!!!!!!!

post 800...

Do you remember when everyone used to say "shnikees" (sh-NIGH-keys)? We used to say that all the time in elementary school. Maybe it was a Utah thing of the nineties?

Anyway. That's the first word I thought of when I realized that this post is numero ocho ciento, or in English, eight hundred. HOLY SHNIKEES. That's a lot of post-age. Good thing it doesn't work like stamps...stamps are expensive!

up and coming...

Every once in awhile you run across someone amazing. One of those someones in my life is the wonderful Sierra, or Sisi of Oh, Just Livin' the Dream! Seriously, she's pretty much one of the greatest women I've ever had the opportunity to meet. She's given me this blog award, the Liebster Award. Can I just say that this really does mean a lot to me? So thank you, Sierra dear. You made my day.

The Liebster Award is given to spotlight up-and-coming blogs with less than 200 followers.

So here's how it works now:
1. Link back to the person who awarded you.
2. Tell who your 5 favorite up and coming blogs are. (you can include the person who awarded you)
3. Post the award on your blog & pass it on!

The five I picked have been helfpul, funny, inspiring, and have helped me get to know these wonderful women better. I could have picked five more--seriously. These are the blogs I want to award tonight.

1. Brianna, my lovely choir chica sister at .Trust. Learn. Grow. Live.. This girl is amazing. She blogs about life in a way that is totally genuine and honest. She's been one of the most influential people in my life.

2. Lindsey, spunky lover of all things photography. She takes brilliant pictures and has such a fun way of sharing her work and her life. Check out her space, the wonderfully designed wold of Lindzena.

3. In My Own Little Corner, or in her corner you will find the glamorous Jazara. Her stories of personal discovery and the cuteness of her relationship with her hubby are funny and inspiring. Something about Jazara just makes me want to be a better person. Every time I see her or read her writing, I can't help but feel loved.

4. Erin Day posts such interesting and insightful things. Oh the Awkwardness of Me... is a place where you will find stories of love, school work, family, friends, and all other things that make up this wonderful life. She's funny and real and so much fun.

5. And last but not least, I link back to Sisi at Oh, Just Livin' the Dream! I'll reiterate what I said before. This girl is amazing. It's interesting how often what she writes rings true for me as well. I love her mucho.

So, awarded peoples. It's your turn. Have fun, okay? :)

700...

Wow. It's really post 700 tonight. How the heck did that happen? Oh...right. I'm a post-happy blog writer who just has to write about everything that goes on in her life, regardless of how interesting it may or may not be to everyone in the cyber web of Internet-ness.

Again, wow. But this time because of my weird attitude. I feel weird! As in happy about life but furious and hurt about a part of it. As in excited about the new opportunites that are coming up for me but confused and unsure about things that happened in the past. As in calm about certain situations that are rather ongoing but unsettled about the same ongoing situations. Okay, so not so calm like I was earlier this evening. Definitely more unsettled than calm. *sigh*

I've come along way on this blog since I first started. It's weird to look back to the year I began blogging. I remember the first day: I was at my grandma's house in Flaming Gorge, very bored, so I started a blog. Since then it's been like a journal, a sounding board, an online memory database, among other things.

700. Seven hundred. Seven zero zero. Wow. I am kind of surprised that I lasted this long! Here's to another hundred!

PS Thanks for being here, by the way. Readers make it even more fun and enjoyable. You are awesome. :)

day 666 uh I mean 88...

Whoa, devil post! If I were my grandma, I'd stop this blog at post 665 and start a new one. But I'm not my grandma, so I'm just gonna "tempt fate" and leave it be! To be honest, I never thought I'd get this far...I'm not a very good blogger!

Anyway, 90 day challenge continued.

a picture of my favorite music genre...

I like to pretend I'm country and all that. Oh, and someday I will own a pair of cowboy boots. Just sayin'.

day 80...

a picture describing the meaning behind my blog name...

I used to have a desk in my room. It looked kind of like this one, with papers and books and shelves of more papers and books by it. Then I got a new chest of drawers for my bedroom and the desk had to go. But when I had a desk, I used it. A lot. I had the ugliest monstrosity of a chair, armed with a wooden back and a fuzzy orange pad for a seat. Ugly or not, I loved that chair, even though it was uncomfortable. It made me stay awake to do homework (if I did my homework).

I created my blog at that desk, when I got my first laptop. That was several years ago. Strange, how things have changed. Like the absence of a desk in my life. Tears.

day 7...

a picture of my most treasured item...

My laptop and journals are my most precious possessions. They contain so much of me, my memories and experiences. I can't remember them all on my own, so I write things down. Whether it's on a blog or on a paper in a book, they are all important to me.

This picture only shows a few of the journals I have. The rest of them take up a shelf and a half on my bookshelf, not to mention all of the memory books and portfolios.

I'll probably be the worst mom "that's my kid's!!" collector ever.

90 day blog challenge...

Well, now that my 30 days of music are over, it's time to start another challenge!! I'm actually excited about this. It keeps me motivated to have some sort of topic or "assignment". I tend to slack off when I get down, which as been happening of late. With choir being over, school out, no job as of yet, and being the only one home, it's easy to get bored and kind of depressed. So now I have something to do besides clean my house!! :)

blog much?

So, I kind of suck at keeping a blog anymore. I have the time to do it, I just don't. Possibly because I'll be gone for a few days (rehearsing, Choir Tour-epic, hanging with friends, etc.) and just forget.

I do want to update though, because for one I type faster than I can handwrite so it makes journaling easier, and second I want to share. And this is what I wanted to share today:

Now, I don't usually believe in horoscopes or fortune cookies or anything, but today's was particularly appropriate. Here's what it said:

"Letting yourself get emotional over bad stuff is healthy. Don't rush through it, Capricorn."
Mood: Uncomfortable
Compatibility: Aries

WELL, then...guess what? Totally PERFECT for today, except for one thing. The reason I've been "emotional over bad stuff" of late is due to a young Aries. In other words, a young man who is, in fact, an Aries. And today I talked to him about said emotion (he asked). And today Aries was my compatible sign.

Horoscope FAIL. But, at the same time...horoscope WIN.

say what?
